Thailand’s Wine Imports inch Closely to Recovery in 1H 2021
Imported wines that go through Thailand were still down in the year, though there were signs that recovery is well on its way.
According to data from the Thai Customs, the country saw 795 million baht (US23.8 million) worth of wines entered its ports between January and June, down 4% over last year.
Imports came mostly from Australia at 300 million baht or a 47% jump compared to the previous year.
Its second top import, wines from France, were still down in the year by 35% to 180 million baht.
Both imported Chilean and American wines increased in the said period by 3% and 9%, respectively, while wines imported from Italian vineyards were down 10%.
By category, the country’s importation of sparkling wines was still depressed, down to 44.8 million baht from 107 million baht previously. Imported bottled wines of over 2L still have not reached a million baht in value year-to-date.
The considerable increase in the June wine imports may point towards the direction of import recovery. Wine imports in the month jumped by 79% to 133.2 million baht (US$3.9 million).
In the month, French wines booted imports from Australia to the second top spot, rising by 54% to a value of 37 million baht. Still, there was a surge of Australian wines that entered in June, rising by over 600% to 34.5 million baht.
Wines from Italy have doubled to 17 million baht, while imports from the US and Chile also saw growth.
