The steady reopening of global economies has driven the growth of Malaysia’s trade in the first half of the year. In particular, the growth in its wine imports was driven by the uptick in importations from its top 5 sources.

Australian wines came in second, increasing by 8% to 45.9 million ringgit.

Wines from Italy that entered Malaysia’s ports jumped by 92% to 12.2 million ringgit.

Among top sources, only wine imports from Chile have yet to recover, down 20% compared to the previous year at 8.8 million ringgit.

Notably, its importation of Spanish wines doubled to 5 million ringgit.

In terms of category, the importation of above 2L bottled wines doubled to over 800,000 ringgit, while sparkling wines and below 2L bottled wines also saw growth.

In June alone, wine importations soared nearly 300% year on year to 33.7 million ringgit (US$8 million). This was despite the full lockdown imposed across the country in the whole month as daily Covid-19 cases surpassed 8,000.
