New Zealand’s Top Wine Importing Countries in 2020
New Zealand, which saw its volume of wine available for consumption rise last year, ordered more wines abroad totalling around NZ$210 million.
The island state is the third-largest wine producer in the Asia Pacific region in 2020. According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), New Zealand posted its highest wine output record to date at 330 million liters, showing an 11% growth year-on-year. It also saw a vineyard expansion of 2% to an all-time high area of 40,000 hectares in the year.
New Zealand also recorded that its total volume of wine available for consumption increased by 4% in 2020 to 113 million liters, based on data from Statistics New Zealand.

Of this figure, 75% came from local wines, while the remaining quarter came from the following top international sources:

1. Australia
Its neighbor state delivered wines worth NZ$117.05 million, increasing 13% from NZ$103.28 million a year ago.
2. France
The world’s second-largest wine producer brought in NZ$58.14 million worth of wines that is 7% less than NZ$62.56 million recorded in 2019.
3. Italy
The top global wine producer and exporter in 2020 exported more wines to New Zealand, which value rose 6% to NZ$16.04 million from NZ$15.19 million previously.
4. Spain
The second-biggest wine exporter shipped in NZ$4.3 million wines to the island state, representing a 16% increase in value from NZ$3.7 million earlier.
5. United States of America
New Zealand bought NZ$4.08 million wines from the United States, which is a 14% rise from NZ$3.59 million a year before.
6. Chile
The fourth-largest wine exporting country brought in NZ$3.48 million wines to New Zealand, increasing 8% in value from NZ$3.23 million a year ago.
7. Argentina
The country ordered more Argentinian wines valued at NZ$2.9 million, climbing 9% from NZ$2.67 million in the earlier year.
8. South Africa
South Africa, one of the top 10 global wine producers, exported more wines to New Zealand which were valued at NZ$2.77 million, a 28% increase from NZ$2.17 million booked in the previous year.
9. Portugal
More Portuguese wines were delivered to New Zealand, which value jumped 19% to NZ$2.22 million compared to NZ$1.86 million logged earlier.
10. Germany
Germany brought NZ$1.26 million wines in New Zealand, slightly increasing from NZ$1.25 million in the past year.
