Alcohol Sales in Restaurants Banned in Thailand as COVID-19 Cases Surge

As Thailand faces a new wave of COVID-19 cases, on April 18 the country started to ban the sale of alcohol in restaurants as part of a set of measures aimed at clamping down on the virus spread. Furthermore, restaurants and cafes have to close before 9 pm with takeaway permitted until 11 pm.

Thailand’s coronavirus outbreak management centre (Sor.Bor.Kor.) has introduced a new raft of measures to tackle a rise in infections, which also curtails operations across supermarkets, gyms, and shopping malls.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has decimated trade at restaurants with the on-trade drinks business seeing sales plummeting, it has opened up an opportunity to focus on online and takeaway business. This growing trend to order food and drink and consume it at home is one hospitality can harness to ride out the impact of the pandemic.
